In Use:
As technology increasingly becomes more vital to our every day
lives so too does the need for security. Realtime-Spy offers a
simple, yet effective, way to monitor your computer and the computers
of others. Through such surveillance you can see what your significant
other is doing during their time on the computer or monitor your
childs' Internet behavior. Realtime-Spy can also be used to detect
any suspicious programs or tasks that may be running on your computer
unbeknownst to you.
The comprehensive list of features that are included with the
Realtime-Spy will definitely allow you to keep any user of your
computers in check. There are, however, a few caveats.
How
does it work?
Once you download the software you run the Admin
program. From the admin screen you select the options that appeal
to you most and then extract an executable program to a floppy
or your computer. Once that executable is made you can deploy
it on the computer you wish to monitor by simply downloading it
to their machine and executing it. After the program is executed
it will 1) be completely transparent or 2) notify the user that
they are being monitored every time they logon to their computer
(depending on the option you selected in the admin screen.
Once the Windows OS load the Realtime-Spy runs itself as svchost.exe
which is transparent to the user. The program then logs all of
the users' keystrokes, programs opened, etc. into files that are
stored on the users' machine and then transmits those files to
an ftp server that was specified in the Admin options before the
executable was made. The files are uploaded every 15minutes to
the server. If no connection to the Internet is available then
the files are not sent. Once the files have been sent you can
access them via a web brower at the server address. Once you authenticate
your account on the server you can view the logs in an easy to
use webpage.
When you are done monitoring the computer you can remotely uninstall
the software (if they are connected to the Internet).
Running into Some Problems:
The first caveat and probably the most noticeable is that the
program is limited to one day of archives. It is true that the
monitoring of the computer is 24/7, but after after 24 hours the
old logs begin to be replaced by the new ones. You can manually
backup the files yourself, but this should be an automated process.
If I could change only one thing about this program it would be
to allow for daily, weekly, and monthly archives.
The second caveat is that remote monitoring is only possible if
the computer is networked. If the computer never connects to the
Internet or a LAN then it doesn't FTP the logs to the server for
you to review. If you have physical access to the computer then
I'm sure you could use Localhost and open port 21 on the machine
for it to log to itself, or you could track down the log files
that are installed on the computer before they get sent out via
FTP. On a positive note, the files are bandwidth friendly so even
users on dial-up won't know that they are sending the log files
via FTP.
