The accuracy and precision of your computer mouse is
drastically affected by many factors. Arguably the most important
of these factors is the mousing surface. The recent shift towards
laser devices has de-emphasized the importance of the mousing surface
since the mouses work on almost anything. The proper mousing surface
can make quite a difference, however. If you extensively use the
computer, do graphic / design editing, or play games where accuracy
and precision are vital, then you already know the importance of
using a good mouse pad. Today we look at the Icemat mouse pad and
see how well it performs.
The
Icemat is made out of glass and the surface measures 250 mm in Width
x 210 mm in Length x 6.2 mm in Depth. The surface has been treated
to give allow for a better grip accuracy and precision. The surface
is not officially approved for use with the optical
(laser) devices although I have tried using the MS Intellimouse
Explorer and several Logitech products with absolutely no problems.
The black version of the Icemat does officially
support Microsoft's Intellimouse. I would recommend looking into
that mouse pad if this is a concern to you. I have tested other
optical mouses that aren't officially supported and have had no
problems. You may run into problems using some devices so be wary
of that.
The size of the mouse pad is quite large
compared to traditional cloth pads that you see in the stores. The
added size allows for continuous movement of the mouse. You no longer
have to endure the annoyance of having to consistently lift the
mouse up. The polyurethane feet located underneath the Icemat keep
the mouse pad firmly in place.
The
Icemat is made out of very sturdy and durable glass. I have been
testing the Icemat for a month and have yet to scratch it or chip
it. Since it is glass the Icemat should be treated with care even
though it would be quite difficult to break under normal circumstances.
Icemat has recently expanded into North
America and have launched their US web site at http://www.icemat.net/. Their office is currently
located in Atlanta, GA, and their products arrive in North America
via UPS.
Icemat's European site can be found at http://www.icemat.com/

The Icemat is placed inside of a styrofoam enclosure to protect
it from any abuse it might incur during shipping.
Pad Surfers are included with the Icemat.
These teflon strips attach to the feet of the mouse and allow for
less friction between the mouse and pad. The feet also protect the
mouse feet which usually wear down over time. The added fluidity
of the Pad Surfers greatly aids accuracy and precision.

The
Icemat retails at $28 USD. For that price you expect a higher quality
and the Icemat definitely delivers. Overall, a very stylish and
impressive package.
Conclusion:
The Icemat is a high-quality product that is an ideal replacement
for anyone's mouse pad. It's sheer performance is only rivaled by
its beauty.
The
Icemat offers more precise movement of the mouse which in turn leads
to higher accuracy and precision in games and applications. If you
are still using a cloth mousepad I highly recommend replacing it
with the Icemat.
