AMD Athlon 2000+ (1.67GHz) Unofficially Released 12/31/2001
There have been many stirrings today regarding the Athlon XP 2000+ (1.6ghz). GamePC has a review of the process here and Krex.com is already selling the processors at a very expensive price of $358.75 (I'd wait for the price to go down ;).

The 2000+ Chips that GamePC reviewed were able to be successfully ran in a MP Setup. Something that may be stopped in the future by AMD or motherboard manufacturers.

Be sure to check out the benchmarks on this awesome chip.

Bottom Line:
The Athlon XP continues to be a winner whilst the Intel and the Pentium 4 remain quiet as the 2.2ghz Northwood draws near.

128mb Gainward GeForce3 ti200? 12/19/2001
The Inquirer is reporting: Graphics overclockers Gainward are set to introduce a TI 200-based card with 128Mb of memory, we hear. The card will be equipped with 4.0ns memory. The company has decided to give this card quite a long name: Gainward GeForce3 PowerPack!!! Ti/500 JUMBO Golden Sample. Be aware, though, that we are talking about Ti 200-based card not one based on the TI 500 chip.

However, graphics card companies such as 3D Labs have been doing this for a long time. It's odd that the Inquirer would think 128mb in a graphic card so unusual. *shrug*

The 128mb on the GeForce3 Ti200 isn't going to offer the sort of performance gain that people are expecting. Gainward would be wise to use the Ti500 instead since it can gain more performance than the Ti200 and would also target the hardcore gaming niche that would pay the higher cost of the added Ram.

Toshiba closes DRAM factory 12/19/2001
From Slashdot Toshiba is getting out of the DRAM business. They had 6.2% of the world market last year, but soon their Manassas, VA facilities will belong to Micron, the Yokkaichi plant's DRAM production will be reduced to a trickle, and Toshiba will be out of the commodity memory market.
Full Article

Snippit:
"Toshiba's withdrawal from the memory market will not be total. It will continue development of embedded DRAM technology, which is DRAM memory that is built onto system LSI (large scale integrated circuit) chips. Such chips, which are custom-designed to perform a specific task and often for a specific device, are seen as a major growth area and many require DRAM as one of a number of components that make up the chip."

"The company also said it will keep a hand in the memory chip market by producing application-specific memories such as NAND flash chips, which are used in memory cards, high-density NOR flash chips, commonly used for application data storage, FCRAM chips (fast cycle RAM), a high-speed memory type, and customized DRAMs."

Tom's Hardware: 21 card Ti Roundup 12/19/2001
Tom's Hardware has a 21 card GeForce Ti Card roundup. The test machines he's using are somewhat dated (p4 1.8ghz, athlon 1.2ghz, pentium 3 800mhz?) and they don't state which system they are using on the benchmarks. Those crazy Germans.

Bottom Line:
"All of these boards offer a lot of bang for your buck. The new GeForce 3 Ti500 may not be much faster than the original GeForce 3, but as the price remains the same, who's complaining? For most users, the Ti200 will be the card of choice, as it offers GeForce 3 technology at an attractive price. On top of that, most Ti200 cards will easily overclock to the level of the original GeForce 3 generation." Read More...

New domain name. 12/18/2001
I've decided to move idreamofelectricsheep.com over to:
Elektrik-Sheep.com It's a lot easier to type and didn't cost 6,000 dollars ;)

I recommend using Dotster since they are cheap ($14.95 US for one year) and reliable. You can also have them manage your DNS for $10 a year.

Dell Axes Itanium Workstation 12/14/2001
   Eweek Reports:

"Dell Computer Corp. is going to pull the plug on its Itanium-based workstation, according to sources at the company.

The withdrawal of the Dell Precision Workstation 730 would mark another setback in Intel Corp.'s efforts to boost relatively lackluster sales of its first 64-bit processor targeted for use in high-end workstations and servers.

Since Intel introduced the Itanium in May, market research firms have found that computer makers have shipped relatively few Itanium-based workstations and servers. Figures compiled by Gartner Dataquest show that computer makers have shipped just over 1,700 workstations and 2,600 servers based on Itanium chips worldwide this year."

Indeed, Compaq Computer Corp., the world's largest seller of Intel-based servers, disclosed last month that it had still not shipped its new Itanium-based server, the ProLiant 590/64, which was first announced in July, because the system failed to pass stress tests conducted by Compaq's labs.

Currently, the 64-bit processor market is dominated by Sun Microsystems Inc., IBM and Hewlett-Packard Co., with each company offering Unix-based hardware built using their own RISC-based 64-bit chips and tied to proprietary software. Intel's hoping to carve out market share by targeting companies looking to add high-end servers based on Microsoft Corp.'s new 64-bit Window operating system."

Pentium 4 2.2GHz for Sale? 12/14/2001
   The Inquirer reports that:

"Major distributers have started offering Intel Pentium 4 processors using the Northwood (.13 micron) die shrink and at speeds of 2.2GHz.
Resellers in North America and Europe can now place orders for the 2.2GHz Pentium 4 parts, which are being made available from the start of next week.

Tech Data, one of the biggest distributors, is already taking orders for 2.2GHz parts.

But as far as we are aware, the official press launch for the parts is not until January, with Intel not wanting to spoil its sales in the now not very long run up to Yuletide.

The 2.2GHz Pentium 4s will be offered initially at a premium price, but at the end of January Intel is expected to re-adjust the prices of its processors, as first reported here.

Meanwhile some Northwood benchmarks seem to have tipped up at this site."

Note: the 2.20GHz Pentium 4 chip is supposedly overclocked to 2923.05MHz and 2656.02Mhz in the first pictures whilst the benchmarks below the pictures are tested at 2.59GHz since the higher speeds were most likely unstable.

Update! Pictures of the P4 2.2GHz:
