pixel Apache patches vulnerability to DoS attack
The Apache Software Foundation has released a patch for its Apache 2.0 HTTP Server to thwart a "significant" denial-of-service vulnerability.

Apache, which makes the popular open-source Web server application, released version 2.0.45 to fix a denial-of-service (DoS) problem. A DoS attack floods a network with data, rendering it inaccessible to legitimate queries.

The vulnerability in version 2.0.44 affects all operating systems, according to the advisory. But Apache issued a specific warning for OS/2 users, noting that for them the new patch still had a DoS vulnerability.

That outstanding issue will be fixed with the upcoming release of 2.0.46, but Apache said it was too important to delay the 2.0.45 patch.

pixel Amazon signs search deal with Google
Google plans to provide search services and sponsored links to Amazon.com under a multiyear deal the companies announced Thursday.

Financial details of the deal were not released. Sponsored links from Google are available now on a selection of Amazon pages. More links, and Google's Web search service, will be made available in the next few months, the companies said.

Google, which dominates the search arena, has been beefing up its sponsorship deals as it expands its ad network and seeks new revenue. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company recently launched a program that identifies the meaning of a Web page and then automatically places relevant ads.

pixel HP cuts Unix server prices
HP has cut the prices on some systems in its Unix server line, as it battles to maintain supremacy in the midrange of the market.

The price reductions come as a result of lower CPU, memory and supports costs. Customers should see HP's midrange server systems drop in cost by close to 20 per cent on the rp8400, rp7410 and rp7405 servers.

The new prices follow similar reductions from Sun and IBM, but as we all know, midrange servers sell for quite a bit less these days than any vendor's list entry on the Web.

pixel Court to rule on Intel worker's spam
In a case testing the limits of free speech in cyberspace, lawyers for a dismissed Intel engineer told the California Supreme Court that he had the right to send e-mails to up to 30,000 Intel employees that criticize the company for firing him.

Lawyers for former Intel engineer Ken Hamidi said Wednesday that silencing him would set a dangerous precedent allowing companies to stifle free speech. But lawyers for the company argued that the chipmaker was not violating anyone's free speech in the case, but merely controlling access to its internal e-mail system, which it considered private property.

The Supreme Court hearing came after two lower courts ruled that Intel could legally prohibit Hamidi from flooding Intel workers with e-mails.
